Hebrews 4:12-13 ~ New Living Translation (NLT)
12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable.
Hebrews 4:12-13 ~ The Message (MSG)
12 God means what He says. What He says goes. His powerful Word is as sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel, cutting through everything, whether doubt or defense, laying us open to listen and obey.
13 Nothing and no one can resist God’s Word. We can’t get away from it—no matter what.
When we study the Word of God and the verses seem to jump off the page and hit you square between the eyes, that’s the meaning of “alive and powerful.” The difference with the Bible than any other book, is that no matter how many times you read it, the words have the same or even more powerful affect with each time they’re read. That is the miracle of the Scriptures, every word penetrates the soul and changes hearts.
I wrote out both the NLT and MSG translations because both versions give us wonderful descriptions of how powerful the Scriptures are.
Here I have combined each statement from both translations. Each statement is the perfect depiction of what the Word of God is to each and every one of us…
- “The Word of God is alive and powerful… God means what He says and what He says goes…”
- “The Word of God is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword… His powerful Word is as sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel…”
- “The Word of God cuts between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow… God’s Word cuts through everything, whether doubt or defense…”
- “The Word of God exposes our innermost thoughts and desires… God’s Word lays us open to listen and obey…”
- “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God… nothing and no one can resist God’s Word…”
- “Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable… We can’t get away from it – no matter what…”
By reading the Bible and allowing it to speak to your heart, the Holy Spirit will bring life and breath to your very soul. The Bible has a way of convicting us of our wrongdoing. It gives us comfort in a way no other book could ever do. It brings joy to our hearts when we see the victory we have in Jesus. And it brings peace to the heart that needs rest.
When I started this daily Bible Study and Journaling journey nearly a year ago, I honestly didn’t know how much it would impact my life. But now! It has become a part of my life so much so that if I miss even one day I feel as though my limbs have been severed. I can function, yes, but something is definitely missing! It’s not just routine or habit, it’s become a way of life. And I never want to change this part of my lifestyle, ever. This is the main reason I decided to create a simple website to share what God lays on my heart and encourage others to get into the Bible each and every day. I challenge anyone to start this kind of journey to see if it doesn’t become a huge lifestyle change in you as well.
On my website homepage I actually quote Hebrews 4:12, “The Word of God is alive and powerful…” because I know how true that statement is. When I post each Bible Study I pray wholeheartedly that it would touch at least one person’s life, bring them closer to the Lord and help them navigate their way through the Scriptures.
When you read Hebrews 4:12 and 13, what comes to your mind? Do you believe God’s Word is alive and powerful? Have you seen the life changing evidence in your own life? Or are you just dabbling here and there, not really sure yet if reading and studying the Bible everyday will ever be a part of your lifestyle? My hope is that you will know the life altering power of the Word of God. I’d say, if you’re not sure it could have an effect on your life, I’m sure God will accept the challenge and show you His presence in your life through His Word.
God’s Word cuts through everything. So if you come to the Scriptures with doubt in your mind, maybe with questioning the very existence of God or you have trouble believing in the truth behind His Son Jesus Christ. My suggestion would be to ask God, as you’re reading the Bible, have Him show you His existence and have the words fly off the pages in order to help you understand who Jesus is and what He did for you on the cross. The Word of God exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. So if your thoughts, your attitude, is on the defense and you have built a wall around your heart and mind, then I would say, ask God to lower those walls and expose what’s eating at you. Have Him cut away the negative experiences that may have caused disbelief. Have Him slice off areas of anger and disappointment or the feelings of abandonment. Once you are open and exposed, that’s when Jesus can step in and start the healing process. God can show you the power behind His Word.
“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God… nothing and no one can resist God’s Word… Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable… We can’t get away from it – no matter what.”
“Nothing and no one can resist God’s Word…” Some may take that as a challenge! So if you are the type of person who thinks they can go through life without seeking God in the Scriptures, you might just find that in other areas of your life God’s light shines through. Everything in creation points to its Creator, who is the Almighty God and our Father in Heaven.
None of us like the idea of being naked and exposed. Think about it! I don’t think too many of us want to walk down “Main St” in our birthday suit for all to see! But the Word of God is not talking about physical nakedness. It is talking about spiritual nakedness. Are you willing to stand before God completely naked and exposed? Can you be open to the idea of allowing Him to cut away the ugly parts? Think about this for a moment… the Word of God is compared to the surgeon’s scalpel. For the most part no one would go to a surgeon to have healthy flesh removed from their bodies. No, when we are prepped for surgery it is to have diseased flesh removed and thrown away. Same with the Word of God, the Scriptures expose and help remove the wicked, diseased, sinful nature which needs to be cut away so the brand new, forgiven and holy nature can be put in its place.
God sees everything. So just because you may have pulled walls up over your heart, it is not going to hide you from the Lord.
Hebrews 4:7b says,
“Today when you hear His Voice, don’t harden your hearts.”
“God means what He says and what He says goes.” Let the Word of God be the scalpel in your life which carves out any ungodly thought or desire. Be accountable to the One who sees you. And as you dive into the Scriptures, pray that God would show you what His Words mean and then as knowledge and wisdom is gained, do what He says! Hear the voice of the Lord, don’t harden your heart because you want to continue in your sinful behaviors and attitudes.
My prayer is that each of us would challenge ourselves to make reading the Bible a lifestyle, not a chore. Have it be what we live for, something we can’t function without. God’s Word is ALIVE and POWERFUL!
~AMEN~
- Because I have experienced the Power of God’s Word myself, I am extending the invitation to anyone who is ready to have the Lord Jesus Christ step into their lives and start the healing process. To make everything brand new. Why not stand before the Lord naked and exposed and pray this prayer of Salvation…
Dear Jesus, You know my heart, all the things I have done and said. Please forgive me for my unbelief. Please forgive me for all of my sins. I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You came to earth to die on the cross for my sins. I believe You rose from the dead to give me freedom from sin and death. By faith through believing in Who You Are, I accept You as my Lord and Savior. Come into my life, cleanse this heart of mine, white as snow. Help me not to doubt any longer and breathe life into me, fill me with Your light. Thank You Jesus! Amen.
- If you solemnly prayed this prayer, tell at least one person, so they can share in your joy!! I rejoice with you! All the angels in Heaven rejoice with you! And just as Jesus has said, “Peace be with you.”
- It is very important to me that those who might be reading these journal pages of mine and don’t yet know the Lord Jesus Christ, that you make that decision. Today. Your heart and mind may not understand everything you have been reading, but if you open your heart to the truth of who Jesus is, you will be saved from sin and death. By the Power of the Holy Spirit you will be amazed at how quickly after giving your heart to the Lord your eyes and ears will be opened to the truth.
