Read John Chapter Two
John 2
Jesus had gathered together His first few disciples and headed to the village of Cana. In Cana He would meet up with His mother and brothers for a wedding.
The story of the wedding at Cana is probably one of the more popular ones, even those who don’t know anything about Jesus or the Bible seem to know this one because Jesus turns water into wine.
But instead of focusing on this miracle, let’s focus on who Jesus is at this very moment. He had not yet made Himself known, which simply means He had not performed any miraculous signs or wonders nor had He proclaimed He was the Son of God. This would be His first miracle, and He was hesitant.
By looking at the “Expositor’s Bible Commentary” we’ll find out why having wine at a wedding was so important.
- A wedding is always a gala occasion, and in a village like Cana it would be a community celebration. “Refreshments” were provided for all guests. Of these, wine was very important. To fail in providing adequately for the guests would involve social disgrace. In the closely knit communities of Jesus’ day, such an error would never be forgotten and would haunt the newly married couple all their lives.
So let’s pick up our story in verses 2:1-3,
1 “The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and His disciples were also invited to the celebration. 3 The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told Him, “They have no more wine.”
Panic would have set in quickly, but the news of the wine being gone would’ve been kept under wraps, no use concerning the bride and groom. So, instead of going to the master of ceremonies, Mary went to her son. “They have no more wine.”
The response given by Jesus to His mother may have sounded a little harsh to some, but it was in the upmost respect that He said, “Dear woman, that’s not our problem. My time has not yet come.” (2:4)
Even though the response from Jesus, sounded kind of like “Don’t bug me…” Mary confidently said to the servants standing nearby, “Do whatever He tells you.” (2:5) She knew her son would do the right thing, her faith in him was already strong and trusting.
Let’s look at what Jesus did…
John 2:6-10,
6 Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, 8 He said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed His instructions.
9 When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. 10 “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”
This may not seem like a miracle Jesus would perform. In the first three books of the New Testament we mainly heard about the healing of the sick and diseased and the casting away of demons, stuff like that. But for some reason John chose to include this story, his Gospel is the only one to record this first miraculous sign from Jesus. Maybe it was show a more human side of Jesus, He was enjoying the wedding celebration and did not want humiliation and disgrace to follow this young couple for the rest of their days. So He stepped in and saved the day.
Or maybe, just maybe… this was the sign the disciples needed to witness to see Jesus in a different light. Maybe before this moment they thought of Him as a good teacher, a friend and traveling companion. But with this first miracle their eyes were opened, maybe this miracle opened up a level of trust that the disciples did not have before this day.
Verse 2:11,
11 “This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed His glory. And His disciples believed in Him.”
They believed in Him. Would a miracle like this be something that would have you believe in Him? Or do you need more?
